Chandigarh: Ahead of the crucial Punjab Assembly elections, suspended Shiromani Akali Dal MLA Pargat Singh will be joining Aam Aadmi Party, sources said.
Pargat Singh was suspended from the party after continued differences with the Akali leadership over a proposed waste treatment plant in his constituency Jalandhar Cantt.
The former Indian Hockey team captain had openly criticised the Akali government for forcing an unpopular project.
The development came just two days after former Bharatiya Janata Party MP Navjot Singh Sidhu quit the Rajya Sabha membership and from the party. His resignation was a big blow to the party.
Punjab is scheduled to elect a new Assembly in early 2017. The BJP-SAD combine has been in power in the state since 2007 and faces a tough opponent in the form of AAP with the Congress, too, trying to bounce back under the leadership of Captain Amarinder Singh.
Former cricketer "Sixer" Sidhu resigned from the Upper House just 80 days after taking oath on April 28, 2016. He was nominated to Rajya Sabha under the distinguished personalities quota.
Sidhu was elected to Lok Sabha from Amritsar twice between 2004 and 2014. He had to give up his seat for senior party leader Arun Jaitley who contested and lost to Captain Amarinder Singh.
