Sugar Levels Tracked Daily, Food Items on Doc's Advice, Limited Questioning: Kejriwal's 10 Days in ED Custody

Routine check-up of sugar level, candies and other food items as advised by the medical team, limited and restricted hours of interrogation – this is how Delhi chief minister Arvind Kejriwal spent 10 days in the custody of the Enforcement Directorate. He was sent to Tihar Jail on Monday after the court remanded him in judicial custody till April 15.

Sunita Kejriwal, the wife of Arvind Kejriwal, had mentioned his poor health and falling sugar levels during the initial stage of his ED custody. She had also said the chief minister is diabetic and was unwell.

Sources in the ED said Kejriwal was taken care of while in custody. “We assigned a team to monitor his health and his diet requirements. His sugar level was monitored daily and it was fine with the medical team. He was in good health. The custodial interrogation was also limited, based on daily requirements of the investigation. We had kept everything he needed. There were candies and other food items as advised by the medical team,” said a senior officer.

The AAP convener was granted permission to meet his wife for 30 minutes daily by the court as well. A former IRS officer of 1993 batch, Kejriwal quit the service to join the anti-corruption movement led by Anna Hazare and later floated the Aam Aadmi Party.

He and the ED director are batchmates but, sources said, the two have not met since his arrest. The requirement has not arisen as the investigation, interrogation and other probe-related works have been assigned to officers, who have continued the questioning process for the accused in custody. There has been no change of rule for anyone, said a senior officer.

Sunita, a 1994-batch IRS officer, is a year junior to both the CM and the ED director. In the last few years, the ED has witnessed some strange instances as many officers have summoned their batchmates, questioned them and arrested them, too, depending on the requirement of related cases. More than a dozen bureaucrats were summoned and interrogated by the ED in connection with allegations or cases of corruption, while over half a dozen senior IAS and IPS officers were arrested.
