Sting operation: Mamata's TMC in a tight spot; opposition demands probe
Following complaints by the opposition, the Election Commission has said it would look into the allegations.

New Delhi: In what is being widely perceived as the biggest embarrassment for the Trinamool Congress (TMC) since the Saradha scam, a sting operation video involving party leaders, has ruffled more than a few feathers. The video purportedly shows TMC leaders and a top cop accepting bribes in return for doling out favours to a fictitious company.

Among those seen in the video accepting cash are party MPs Mukul Roy and Saugata Roy. The former SP of Burdwan SMH Mirza whose transfer by the Election Commission ahead of the 2014 general elections was resisted by Chief Minister Mamata Banerjee, was also seen accepting cash on behalf of Mukul Roy. The ripples of the expose were clearly felt on the floor of Parliament.

Following complaints by the opposition, the Election Commission has said it would look into the allegations.

With the state elections less than a month away, the opposition did its part. A BJP protest rally to the Raj Bhavan in central Kolkata turned violent after protesters breached police barricades. The BJP has already demanded Mamata's resignation, the Left and Congress demanded a Parliamentary and CBI probe into the issue.

BJP leader Siddharth Nath Singh said, "This is an open and shut case. Nothing is left. Therefore I demand that Mamata Banerjee should step down immediately."

Meanwhile, The Trinamool Congress has called it a political conspiracy and questioned the authenticity of the video.

Although the authenticity of the video is yet to be verified, the expose may have dealt a serious blow to the image of Mamata Banerjee and her party ahead of the Assembly elections.
