Chennai: Rajinikanth and Kamal Haasan shared stage at a film launch in Chennai on Wednesday, but remained ambiguous when asked if their friendship from their filmy heydays would also translate into a political alliance.
“Only time will tell,” was Rajinikanth’s reply to the Rajini-Kamal combine. The two superstars had announced their political ambitions within a month of each other. While Rajinikanth wants to practice ‘spiritual’ politics, Haasan is a hard core rationalist. But this has not stopped rumours that the two could join hands instead of being rivals.
The two giants of Tamil cinema had also appeared together at a fundraising event in Kuala Lampur on January 7.
Talking about his political strategy, Haasan wrote in his column recently, “I'd not antagonise my friends to secure my position like usual politicians. Nor is the youth ready to continue under such leadership. I'd attempt to reach out to elders and friends too,” leading many to believe he was referring to Rajinikanth.
After beating Rajinikanth to the political plunge, the 63-year-old actor has wasted no time in making his agenda clear and announced that he would contest all the seats in the next assembly elections. He will announce the name of his political party on February 21 and would also begin a state-wide tour the same day.
Rajinikanth may be a bit behind, but that has not stopped him from announcing that he too would form a party to contest from all constituencies in the next Assembly polls. However, he has not yet announced the name or the symbol of his party or laid out any strategy.
When asked what he would do if the elections are held in the next sixth months, considering the political turmoil in the state, he said he is prepared. “Even if the state elections are held in the next six months, I’m prepared to contest,” he said. But he remained cryptic about the next stage of his strategy, saying “please wait and watch”. On appointing office bearers, he said, “It is part of our plan”.
