Lucknow: After capturing 325 seats in Uttar Pradesh assembly election 2017, the Bhartiya Janta Party’s (BJP) main focus would be to fulfil promises featuring in its manifesto.
If the sources are to be believed, Yogi Adityanath-led government will soon be taking steps to shut down illegal slaughterhouses. The renewal of the licenses of legal slaughterhouses could also be in jeopardy, a source added.
The manifesto promised promulgation of an ordinance in this regard by midnight on the very day a saffron regime took over the reins of the state.
It is remarkable that last year India exported 13,14,158.05 metric tonnes of buffalo meat, which was worth 26,681.56 crore Indian Rupees. Out of a total 72 legal slaughter houses in India, 38 are in Uttar Pradesh.
As per the figures of the Animal Husbandry Department of Uttar Pradesh, the state produced 7515.14 lakh kilogrammes of buffalo meat, 1171.65 lakh kilogrammes of goat meat, 230.99 lakh kilogrammes of sheep meat, and 1410.32-kilogram pork meat in the year 2014-15.
The slaughter houses in the state have permission to kill a bull ageing more than 15 years or an animal of an unhealthy breed. As per the 2014 report by Agricultural and Processed Food Products Export Development Authority (APEDA), with a 19.1% share, Uttar Pradesh is the largest producer of meat, followed by Andhra Pradesh at 15.2% and West Bengal at 10.9%.
The state of UP has stayed on the top from 2008 to 2013 in meat production. This rise continued in the 19th Livestock Census in 2012. With an increase of 29% in the state, it increased from 2,38,12,000 to 3,06,25,000. At the same time, with a 20% decline in Andhra Pradesh, the population has decreased from 1,32,71,000 to 1,06,22,000.
If the new government in Uttar Pradesh bans the export of meat, the state risks losing Rs 11,350 crore in revenue. And if the ban on slaughterhouses persists for the next five years, the revenue loss may mount up to Rs 56000 crore. In the year 2015-16, UP exported 5,65,958.20 metric tonnes of buffalo meat.
