Sangma is NCP's Meghalaya CM candidate
P A Sangma announced himself as NCP's chief ministerial candidate in next year's assembly elections in Meghalaya.

New Delhi: The news is official now. Nationalist Congress Party MP Purno A Sangma will be his party’s chief ministerial candidate in next year's assembly elections in Meghalaya.

The former Lok Sabha Speaker made the announcement in Shillong on Tuesday.

The news was confirmed by Sangma’s son and NCP youth wing president, Conrad Sangma.

Conrad was quoted by news agency PTI as saying that his father announced his candidature at a state-level party convention held at his home town Tura in West Garo Hills district

P A Sangma, who was the chief minister of Meghalaya from February 6, 1988 to March 25, 1990 before losing power to B B Lyngdoh, is a nine-time MP from Tura Lok Sabha seat in a row.

Sangma’s announcement is important because the ruling Congress is weighed down by factionalism and leadership issue frequently.

Meghalaya will go to assembly polls in February 2008.
