Tamil Nadu Chief Minister M Karunanidhi said the state would not tolerate the defacing of statues of leaders.

Chennai: The desecration of the statue of legendary Tamil rationalist leader E V Ramasamy or Periyar on Thursday morning threatens to snowball into a major political issue.

Tamil Nadu Chief Minister M Karunanidhi told the state Assembly that the state would not tolerate the defacing of statues of leaders installed in across the state and warned of stern action against those indulging in such acts.

Strongly condemning the desecration of the statue at Srirangam, Karunanidhi said four people were arrested appropriate action would be taken against those involved in the incident.

Replying to a special call attention tabled by C Gnanasekaran (Congress), Karunanidhi said there might be some divergent views on installing statues of great leaders.

There might also be some differences on the views expressed by the great leaders. But vandalising their statues would not be allowed at any cost.

"The Government will not tolerate such incidents", he said and added that those who had committed such atrocities could not be pardoned.
