New Delhi: Upping the ante against the Bharatiya Janata Party over the mysterious Vyapam scam in Madhya Pradesh, the opposition has questioned Prime Minister Narendra Modi's silence in the case. Over 40 people have died in the case in the last two years and the case is becoming murkier with each passing day.
The Congress has been demanding a probe by the Central Bureau of Investigation into the multi-crore scam, which has been refused by the state government. The opposition is demanding Chief Minister Shivraj Singh Chouhan's resignation in the high-profile scam.
While giving an assurance that each death in the case will be probes, Chouhan said, "The High Court struck down the Congress's demand for CBI probe and is monitoring the case itself."
Demanding a probe by an independent body, Congress MP Jyotiraditya Scindia said, "We demand a thorough investigation by an independent agency with regard to all the deaths linked with this scam."
Asking why a probe by the CBI was not ordered in the scam, Congress general secretary Digvijaya Singh said, "How can a healthy person die all of a sudden? Akshay was a healthy person, he had no heart problems. Post-mortem should be conducted at AIIMS in New Delhi. BJP asks for a CBI probe for every case, why not in this?"
The Aam Aadmi Party has also demanded a CBI probe in the case.
After the death of journalist Akshay Singh who was reporting on the case, the dean of a medical college in Jabalpur, suspected of having links to some accused in the Vyapam scam, was found dead under mysterious circumstances in a Delhi hotel on Sunday.
The Vyapam scam has become a major political controversy with numerous witnesses and accused dying under mysterious circumstances. The Madhya Pradesh Professional Examination Board (MPPEB) scam relates to irregularities in admission in state-run medical colleges and recruitment in government jobs.
Alleged financial and administrative irregularities, including unauthorised disposal of application forms, worth crores of rupees by the MPPEB have been pointed out in an audit report.
The MPPEB conducts entrance and recruitment tests for admission in medical and engineering courses, and selection in certain government services, among others.
It has been alleged that corrupt officials at the board took money to compromise the examination and recruitment for several professional courses. These courses include pre-engineering, pre-medical, MCA, teaching etc.
