New Delhi: Former vice-president and senior Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) leader Bhairon Singh Shekhawat has come out in support of Gujarat Chief Minister Narendra Modi saying his name has been suggested for the post of prime minister because he deserves it.
Shekhawat, however, quickly added that L K Advani's significance in the party has not diminished in any way.
"We are talking about the party's future. After five years there will be another prime minister. In BJP's terms, if Modi's name has been suggested it is not a crime. In a family a child's future is discussed by the elders. It is not that Advaniji's importance has become any less because of Modi. Every BJP member has the capability to hold a responsible post whether it is Modi or Bhairon Singh Shekhawat. If the party has decided to name Modi, it is because he has worked well," said Shekhawat.
Even though Advani has been named as the prime ministerial candidate of the BJP-led National Democratic Alliance (NDA) many senior party leaders including Arun Shourie, Arun Jaitley and M Venkaiah Naidu have said that Narendra Modi was the future prime ministerial candidate.
But BJP President Rajnath Singh has been evasive on the question of Modi being the future prime ministerial candidate of the party.
