Maharashtra Election Schedule 2024: Polling will be held on Monday, May 20 for the fifth phase of Lok Sabha polls to 13 constituencies in Maharashtra where Union minister Piyush Goyal, actor-politician Bhushan Patil and public prosecutor Ujjwal Nikam are among the prominent candidates. Maharashtra has 48 Lok Sabha seats, the second-highest after Uttar Pradesh which has 80.

The 13 constituencies which are going to polls are Dhule, Dindori, Nashik, Kalyan, Palghar, Bhiwandi, Thane, Mumbai North, Mumbai North-West, Mumbai North-East, Mumbai North-Central, Mumbai South-Central, and Mumbai South.

Mumbai Voting: Key Constituencies

Of the 48 seats in Maharashtra, Mumbai accounts for six, while the adjoining Mumbai Metropolitan Region (MMR) has four. Mumbai’s six seats include Mumbai North, Mumbai North East, Mumbai North West, Mumbai North Central, Mumbai South and Mumbai South Central. The MMR has Thane, Kalyan, Bhiwandi and Palghar.

The elections will be fought with two alliances – the ruling Mahayuti comprising BJP, NCP (Ajit Pawar) and Shiv Sena (Eknath Shinde) faction and the MVA or Maha Aghadi, with Sena (UBT), NCP (Sharad Pawar) and Congress.

Key Candidates

Mumbai North: In this phase, all eyes will be on Union Minister Piyush Goyal, who is making his debut from the Mumbai North constituency, Goyal is up against actor-politician Bhushan Patil.

Mumbai North Central: Others in focus will be public prosecutor Ujjwal Nikam–responsible for Ajmal Kasab’s execution–who is contesting from the Mumbai North Central seat on BJP’s ticket. Nikam is pitted against Mumbai Regional Congress Committee president Varsha Gaikwad.

Mumbai South: In Mumbai South, sitting MP Arvind Sawant of Shiv Sena (UBT)– who won the last two elections against Milind Deora– is facing a challenge from Yamini Jadhav from Shiv Sena (Uddhav Balasaheb Thackeray faction).

Mumbai South Central: There is also a close fight between estranged friends and hardcore Shiv Sainiks in Mumbai South Central constituency where Eknath Shinde led Shiv Sena nominee and sitting MP Rahul Shewale is pitted against the Shiv Sena UBT candidates and former MP Anil Desai.

Mumbai North-West: In Mumbai North-West, the Shiv Sena’s Ravindra Waikar, an MLA who recently switched sides is to Shinde camp pitted against Shiv Sena (UBT)’s Amol Kirtikar, who is the son of sitting Shiv Sena two-time MP Gajanan Kirtikar.

Mumbai North-East seat: In the Mumbai North-East seat, the fight is between Sanjay Dina Patil, a former NCP MP, who has been fielded by Shiv Sena (UBT) against Mihir Kotecha of the BJP.

Kalyan: In Kalyan, there is a Sena Vs Sena fight. From here, Maharashtra Chief Minister Eknath Shinde’s son Dr Shrikant Shinde is taking on Shiv Sena (UBT)’s Vaishali Darekar-Rane, a former Maharashtra Navnirman Sena (MNS) leader.
