New Delhi: Having won the Uttar Pradesh Assembly Elections earlier this month, BSP chief and Uttar Pradesh Chief Minister Mayawati was all praise for Chief Election Commissioner N Gopalaswami on Sunday and thanked him for conducting free and fair elections in the state.

She added that she hoped future polls elsewhere would be held on the same pattern.

"The Election Commission has an important role to play in safeguarding the Constitution. They conducted the UP assembly elections in a free and fair manner. People belonging to weaker sections and the poor among upper castes, who were not allowed to vote earlier, exercised their franchise this time. This has strengthened democracy. The special steps they have taken are appreciable,” PTI quoted her as saying.

Ending a 14-year era of coalition government in the politically-turbulent state of Uttar Pradesh in a historic win, Mayawati was sworn in as the 40th Chief Minister of the state on May 13.

On Saturday, Mayawati met Prime Minister Manmohan Singh and spelt out the relationship between her government and Centre saying it was one of cooperation rather than the confrontationist between Mulayam and UPA Government.
