New Delhi: Opposition parties' vice presidential candidate Gopalkrishna Gandhi on Sunday said he will file his nomination on July 18, after a meeting of opposition parties addressed by Congress President Sonia Gandhi.
Sonia Gandhi said that Gopalkrishna Gandhi's was the only name discussed when 18 opposition parties met to decide on their candidate for the vice presidential elections.
"The 18 opposition parties have unanimously agreed to field Gopalkrishna Gandhi as their joint candidate for the vice presidential election. We spoke to him. He has agreed to be the joint opposition candidate," the Congress president said after the meeting.
The Opposition's candidate for President's post Meira Kumar also attended the meeting.
Opposition leaders, including AICC general secretary Ghulam Nabi Azad, CPI(M) general secretary Sitaram Yechury and TMC's Derek O'Brien had called the former governor from the meeting to seek his consent.
The JD(U), which had broken ranks with the opposition over the presidential poll, also attended the meeting which chose Mahatma Gandhi's grandson to be its nominee for Vice-president.
The election for President's post will be held on Monday while the new Vice President will be elected on August 5.
