DMK Moves Madras HC After Jayalalithaa's Portrait Unveiled at Tamil Nadu Secretariat
The DMK has condemned the portrait stating that Jayalalithaa had been convicted in a disproportionate assets case and therefore wasn’t eligible for such the honour.

Chennai: DMK has opposed the unveiling of former Tamil Nadu chief minister J Jayalaithaa’s portrait at the secretariat on Monday. The party boycotted the event and filed a petition in the Madras High Court, which has said that it will take up the matter on Tuesday.

DMK MLA J Anbazhagan also submitted a representation to Assembly Speaker’s office on Sunday against the event.

The DMK has condemned the portrait stating that Jayalalithaa had been convicted in a disproportionate assets case and therefore wasn’t eligible for such the honour.

DMK working president MK Stalin slammed the AIADMK government and tweeted saying, "This move has brought down the dignity and sanctity of the House. Despite opposition from DMK and other parties, Speaker has gone ahead and allowed this to happen. This is unacceptable."

State Assembly Speaker P Dhanapal unveiled the portrait in the presence of CM E Palaniswami, deputy CM O Panneerselvam and other MLAs.

CM Palaniswami defended his government’s decision and said Jayalalithaa’s picture would be a great honour as she has been inspirational to the people of Tamil Nadu. He had met Prime Minister Narendra Modi in May last year and urged him to unveil the portrait.

A PIL against placing portraits of convicted leaders in government buildings has been pending in the Madras High Court.
