Jaipur: The ruling BJP and the Congress in Rajasthan were engaged in a war of words on Saturday after more than 500 cows died over the last two weeks at a government-run shelter reportedly because of starvation.
The Congress took out a "Gaurakshak Padayatra" in Jaipur demanding "result-oriented efforts" from the state government to protect cows.
Party leaders said the deaths at the Hingonia Bovine Animal Rehabilitation Centre proved the BJP was interested only in politics in the name of cows and not in protecting the animal.
The BJP stands exposed. 500 Cows at the 'gaushala' have died because of non availability of food, [name]Congress leader Sachin Pilot[/name].
Reports said the cows were found dead in the 'gaushala' with their hooves stuck in dirt and dung and their bodies showing signs of starvation. The cowsheds were not cleaned after contractual workers there went on strike last month demanding wages.
The Vishva Hindu Parishad (VHP) and the Bajrang Dal too targeted the Raje government for its "inhuman behaviour" with the cows at the shelter.
"The 'gaushala', instead of a rehabilitation centre, appears to be a graveyard for the cows. There are heaps of dirt and mud all over the centre in which the animals get trapped and killed. Despite more than 500 cows dying, no action and effort from the administration is highly condemnable," said VHP's senior office-bearer Narpat Singh Shekhawat.
