Congress wants power of its own
Coalition is not a 'permanent arrangement' but UPA will stay for now, says party leader Janardan Dwivedi.

New Delhi: The Congress, which leads the UPA government, on Wednesday said "coalition is not a permanent arrangement" a day after a HT-CNN-IBN survey reported that the party would secure a majority on its own if general elections were held in the second week of January.

"Coalition is not a permanent arrangement. It is but natural for a national party like the Congress to think of coming to power on its own," said Janardan Dwivedi, chairperson of the All India Congress Committee’s media department.

Dwivedi said the UPA government would last for five years and his statement doesn’t mean the party was thinking of calling for mid-term elections. “At the moment, we are committed to the present coalition and cannot think of anything else".

Dwivedi refused to answer whether the Congress could think of coming to power on its own and said "future will decide future things".

The survey, which was conducted by the Centre for Study of Developing Societies, says the Congress would win 300 seats, up from the 222 seats in won in 2004, if elections were held in the second week of January. But the survey warns that the party’s approval has not increased in the last five months.

Dwivedi downplayed the findings and said: "We are unaffected by such surveys. It is the job of the media to conduct them; Congress makes its own independent assessment."
