Congress sharpens attack on BJP over Lalit Modi visa row
Congress sought clarification from the Prime Minister and BJP president Amit Shah over the issue and accused BJP spokespersons of defending Lalit Modi.

Stepping up attack on Bharatiya Janata party (BJP) over the controversy surrounding former Indian Premier League chief Lalit Modi, Congress has said that Prime Minister Narendra Modi was losing political capital by trying to protect External Affairs Minister and Rajasthan Chief Minister through his continued silence on the "indefensible issue".

Congress sought clarification from the Prime Minister and BJP president Amit Shah over the issue and accused BJP spokespersons of defending Lalit Modi. "PM and the BJP President should clarify. The BJP spokespersons are not defending BJP, they are defending Lalit Modi. He is being given clean chit by Gadkari in Jaipur. Finance Minister Arun Jaitley is giving him a clean chit in San Francisco," Congress leader Tom Vadakkan said.

The party alleged that Union Ministers were also giving clean chits to both the leaders without any investigation and probe, thus "exposing" the double standards of BJP.

Rajasthan Pradesh Congress Committee (PCC) chief and party leader Sachin Pilot demanded resignation of External Affairs Minister Sushma Swaraj and State Chief Minister Vasundhara Raje on legal, ethical and moral grounds for helping former Lalit Modi.

Pilot also accused the BJP of projecting an absconder like Modi as a victim and asserted that no credible inquiry could take place as long as Raje occupied the Chief Ministers' chair. "Defending the BJP leaders while attacking Rakesh Maria reflects the double standard of BJP," Pilot said.
