Even after 47 deaths in the last few years, the Union Home Ministry on Monday dismissed the opposition's demand for a probe into Madhya Pradesh Vyapam scam by the Central Bureau of Investigation (CBI).
Talking about the call for a CBI probe into the scam, Union Home Minister Rajnath Singh said that there was no need for a probe by the central agency as both Madhya Pradesh High Court and Supreme Court were satisfied with the ongoing probe.
The Home Minister, however, added that the government had no objection to a CBI probe if the Madhya Pradesh High Court or the Supreme Court recommends it. He also hit out at the opposition, saying they must not "influence the ongoing probe".
Reacting to the statement of the Home Minister, the Congress termed it as a "classic BJP cover up".
This comes just after three Vyapam-linked deaths in less than 72 hours. While a journalist covering the scam died on Saturday, a trainee sub-inspector recruited through Vyapam was found dead in a lake in Madhya Pradesh's Sagar district on Monday morning.
Reacting to the latest incident of Vyapam-linked death, the Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) had said that while his government was ready for a CBI probe, it would overstep court's jurisdiction.
BJP spokesperson GVL Narasimha Rao had said, "We are ready for a CBI probe but the decision will be overstepping the court's jurisdiction. The entire probe on Vyapam is under the supervision of the court and the Chief Minister has written to the SIT ordered by the court."
Madhya Pradesh Chief Minister Shivraj Singh Chouhan, meanwhile, urged mediapersons to not link every death to the scam.
This came even as the Congress stepped up its attack on Chouhan, demanding his resignation for an “impartial probe".
Attacking Prime Minister Narendra Modi, the opposition party said he should explain and take moral responsibility for the events.
"Shivraj Singh Chouhan should be sacked and an impartial probe should be done in the Vyapam scam," Congress spokesperson Randeep Surjewala said.
