Umpire Informed Angelo Mathews of Timed-out Danger Before Helmet Issue Took Place: Report
Angelo Mathews was reportedly informed by umpire Richard Illingworth he was in danger of being timed-out before the Sri Lankan batter's helmet malfunctioned.

Angelo Mathews’ timed-out dismissal has sparked a widespread debate within the cricket fraternity although it has been reported that the Sri Lankan batter was already informed about the timed-out dismissal danger when he came out to bat.

According to a report in ESPNCricinfo, umpire Richard Illingworth told Mathews he had 30 seconds left to be ready to face when he walked in to bat, before the helmet malfunction took place.

The incident has sparked widespread debates about the spirit of cricket, as Bangladesh went on to beat Sri Lanka by 3 wickets at the Arun Jaitley Stadium in New Delhi.

After Sadeera Samarawickrama’s dismissal, Mathews walked onto the field, he was subsequently informed by Illingworth that he had to face the next ball in 30 seconds or there could be consequences.

As fate would have it, Angelo Mathews’ helmet had a broken chin strap, and by the time the other helmet arrived, Bangladesh players appealed for the timed-out dismissal and Angelo had to walk back in anguish, becoming the first-ever international batter to be timed out.

While the Sri Lankan slammed the match officials that there was an equipment malfunction because of which the delay happened, the umpires were forced to go by the rulebook as ICC’s playing conditions claim a batsman must be ready to face the next ball after a dismissal within two minutes.

Pleading his case, Mathews also shared a video during which he came out to bat in exactly one minute and 10 seconds after Sadeera’s dismissal, he walked down the stairs and came to the pitch, had a quick word with Charith Asalanka but a minute and 55 seconds had elapsed in the time.

That’s when Illingworth reportedly informed Mathews about the danger of the timed-out dismissal if he was not ready to face the next ball. The Sri Lankan was quick to realise the chin strap of his helmet was broken, and he didn’t inform the on-field umpires, instead, signalled to the dressing room for a new helmet.

By the time the new helmet arrived, the clock kept ticking and two-and-a-half minutes had passed away, after which one of Shakib Al Hasan’s teammates prompted him to appeal. Erasmus was approached by the Bangladesh players, the umpire confirmed with them before adjudging Angelo Mathews out.
