In a surprising remark, Union Road Transport Minister Nitin Gadkari on Tuesday said that the government has no intention to make six airbags mandatory for all cars in India. The statement has been issued by the minister, who introduced the need for the 6 airbags rule for passenger cars in 2022, which was slated to come in force from October, this year.
While speaking at an automotive event in New Delhi the minister said “We don’t want to make six airbags rule for cars mandatory as people are cautious. Whatever models have six airbags, people may prefer to take that car. It’s up to the manufacturers and people to decide.”

Reacting about the mandatory six airbag norms in India, Gadkari in September 2002 tweeted that “Considering the global supply chain constraints being faced by the auto industry and its impact on the macroeconomic scenario, it has been decided to implement the proposal mandating a minimum of 6 Airbags in Passenger Cars (M-1 Category) w.e.f 01st October 2023.”
Meanwhile, in 2021, a rule was issued regarding the airbag norms, where it was advised to all the car manufacturers that vehicles produced after the mentioned date must be equipped with front seat airbags.
What are airbags?
It is a type of vehicle restraint device, installed inside the dashboard, which acts after the car crashes or meets with an accident. It works as a safeguard and reduces the chances of having severe injuries for both passengers and drivers during accidents.
