REPUBLIC DAY 2024: India will celebrate 75th Republic Day on January 26. This day marks the pivotal moment when the nation formally adopted its Constitution in 1950. 75th Republic Day Chief Guest: French President Emmanuel Macron
The Chief Guest for this monumental occasion is the President of France, Emmanuel Macron. This marks the sixth instance of a French leader attending the Republic Day celebrations. Last year, Egyptian President Abdel Fattah el-Sisi was the guest of honour.
Republic Day History
Though India gained independence on August 15, 1947, it was on January 26, 1950, that the country formally declared itself a Sovereign, Democratic and Republic state with the adoption of its Constitution. So this year marks the 75th Republic Day.
Dr. Rajendra Prasad, the first President of India, unfurled the national flag, symbolising the birth of the Indian Republic. Since then, January 26 has been commemorated as a national holiday, honouring the principles of democracy and self-governance.
Republic Day Significance
The Republic Day parade in New Delhi is the highlight of the celebrations. The President of India hoists the national flag at the Kartavya Path (formerly Rajpath), followed by a spectacular display of military prowess and cultural diversity along Kartavya Marg. The event, organised by the Ministry of Defence, pays homage to the brave soldiers who sacrificed their lives for the country’s freedom.
The parade features tableaux from different states and government departments, showcasing the rich cultural heritage and unity in diversity of India. The Prime Minister pays respects to the brave soldiers at the Amar Jawan Jyoti at India Gate, a solemn moment that symbolises the nation’s gratitude to those who made the ultimate sacrifice.
Republic Day Celebrations Nationwide
Republic Day is celebrated with great fervour throughout the nation. Various government offices, schools and public spaces hoist the National Flag and organise cultural events. The day serves as a reminder of the values enshrined in the Constitution, emphasising the power of democracy and the citizens’ role in shaping the nation’s destiny.
In addition to the parade, the President of India bestows military honours such as the Paramvir Chakra, Ashok Chakra and Vir Chakra upon soldiers. The prestigious Padma Awards are also conferred to recognise outstanding contributions by civilians in various fields.
