PM Modi says Virat Kohli gave the nation a 'birthday gift' while ex-India batters Virender Sehwag, Suresh Raina all praises for Men in Blue after win over South Africa.

Rohit Sharma-led Indian team continued their winning run at the Eden Gardens in Kolkata on Sunday, November 5 as Virat Kohli marked his 35th birthday with his 49th ODI century. Kohli’s special knock helped India record a massive total of 326/5 but South Africa could only muster up 83 runs in reply.

Ravindra Jadeja’s fifer and Mohammed Shami’s pace was too hot to handle for the Proteas as India emerged triumphant by 243 runs to seal their top spot in the ODI World Cup points table.

While Prime Minister Narendra Modi hailed India’s teamwork in their win over South Africa, former cricketers and dignitaries flooded social media with congratulatory posts after the Men in Blue crushed the Proteas.

“Our cricket team is triumphant yet again! Congratulations to the team for a splendid performance against South Africa. Great teamwork. They have also given a great birthday gift to Virat Kohli, who played a lovely innings today,” wrote PM Modi on social media platform X.

Ex-India spinner Harbhajan Singh called India ‘invincible’ after their eighth consecutive group stage win.

Irfan Pathan said that India have become ‘knockout’ specialists in the World Cup, while Virender Sehwag also hailed the clinical win from the hosts.

Former England captain Michael Vaughan claimed that the India team are ‘too good’ for other sides, whereas his banter buddy Wasim Jaffer hailed the Indian ‘juggernaut’.

Former Indian batter Suresh Raina revealed how Virat Kohli would aim to smash a century every game, and hailed Mohammed Shami and Ravindra Jadeja for his fiery spell.

Rohit Sharma and Co. sit comfortably atop the World Cup points table and they will kick-start their preparations for the semifinal after their last group stage game against the Netherlands next Sunday.
