Music composer Anirudh Ravichander has been awarded the Youth Icon (Popular Choice) award at the CNN News18 Indian of the Year 2023. The music composer had everyone dancing to his magical tunes throughout the year. Having composed music for over 10 movies in 2023, Anirudh had everyone’s attention with his work in Vijay’s Varisu, Rajinikanth’s Jailer, Shah Rukh Khan’s Jawan, and Vijay’s Leo. All his songs ruled the music charts in 2023.
Anirudh received the award from renowned filmmaker Mani Ratnam. Anirudh looks up to Ratnam as a legend but the duo is yet to work with each other. Anirudh garnered the most votes in the Youth Icon (Popular) category. Other nominees in the category were Indo-Canadian singer and rapper AP Dhillon, influencer Kusha Kapila, podcaster and influencer Ranveer Allahbadia, and trans-woman doctor Trinetra Haldar. While Ravichander received the Youth Icon (Popular) award, Haldar won in the Youth Icon (Jury) category.
As he took to the stage, he touched Mani Ratnam’s feet. He went on to say, “I am very, very proud to receive his award from Mani Sir. Thank you so much sir, for inspiring us all these years and still, sir. Never never in my wildest dreams did I think that I’ll be on the stage. Thanks to CNN-News 18. I’ve been an avid follower of this event for many years now 12-13 years now and to be on the stage is really special for me. It all started over a decade ago with Kolaveri D. I was just undergraduate student with no dreams whatsoever but yeah, I think, today to stand here is a big thing. I feel really proud! Thank you to the jury and all the people who voted for me.”
Anirudh has worked with top actors like Thalapathy Vijay, Ajith and Rajnikanth. He debuted as a music composer in the film 3, directed by his cousin Aishwarya R Dhanush. His first song, Why This Kolaveri Di, from the 2012 film 3, became a global sensation with over 424 million views on YouTube.
