Shreyas Iyer has made his much-awaited Ranji Trophy 2023-24 return in Mumbai’s ongoing semi-final clash with Tamil Nadu Sharad Pawar Cricket Academy BKC. However, it wasn’t a happy outing for the under-fire middle-order batter who lasted eight deliveries and contributed just three runs before being dismissed on Day 2 of the contest currently underway in Mumbai.
Iyer recently lost his BCCI central contract with the board announcing that he hasn’t been considered in this round of recommendations along with wicketkeeper-batter Ishan Kishan.

Iyer, eager to make a statement, charged down the track and ended up deflecting the ball onto the stumps to be bowled for 3 off 8 by Tamil Nadu pacer Sandeep Warrier.
Iyer was part of India squad for the first two Tests of their ongoing five-match series against England at home. He managed 35, 13, 27 and 29 across the four innings and there were reports he complained of back spasms during the 2nd Test in Vizag.
The 29-year-old wasn’t picked for the remaining three Tests and it was expected he will turn out for Mumbai’s Ranji Trophy quarter-final match with Baroda.
Iyer wasn’t part of the fixture as Mumbai advanced to the last-four on the basis of their first-innings lead. However, later on, he was named in their squad for the semis clash though.
BCCI hasn’t revealed any specific reason why Iyer wasn’t given a central contract. He was in Grade B last season.
However, the development is being heavily linked to BCCI expressing its unhappiness over the trend of centrally contracted cricketers skipping domestic tournaments.
Interestingly, BCCI, in its announcement of the contracts for the 2023-24 season, recommended all cricketers to take part in domestic cricket when not on India duty.
“The BCCI has recommended that all athletes give precedence to participating in domestic cricket during periods when they are not representing the national team,” the statement from the board read.
