When Rajinikanth Appeared In Remake Of A Vijayakanth Film
While Rajinikanth has appeared in both Telugu and Hindi films as well, Vijayakanth only appeared in Tamil films.

Rajinikanth and the late Captain Vijaykanth are both considered stalwarts of Tamil cinema. They also had a strong camaraderie between themselves, having appeared together in films like En Kelvikku Enna Bathil, where Vijayakanth played Rajinikanth’s younger brother.

While Rajinikanth has appeared in both Telugu and Hindi films as well, Vijayakanth only appeared in Tamil films in his career. This makes him one of the very few Tamil stars who have not appeared in films from any other industry. But do you know that Rajinikanth appeared in a remake of a film starring Vijayakanth in the lead?

In 1981, director SA Chandrashekhar came up with a script based on a story written by his wife Shoba. The script was made into the film Sattam Oru Iruttarai which starred Vijayakanth in the lead. The story follows a man determined to take revenge on three individuals for the deaths of his father and elder sister, while his other sister, a police inspector, tries to stop them legally.

Sattam Oru Iruttarai was Chandrasekhar’s second directorial venture. Released on February 14, 1981, the film was a significant commercial hit, sparking a trend of Tamil films centred around the justice system, many of which were also directed by Chandrasekhar.

The film was so successful that it was remade in multiple languages including Hindi titled Andhaa Kanoon directed by T Rama Rao. The story was mostly unchanged and the protagonist of the film, played by Vijayakanth in the original, was played by Rajinikanth in Andhaa Kanoon. The film is famous for being the Bollywood debut of Rajinikanth. Andhaa Kanoon had an extended cameo by Amitabh Bachchan and also starred Hema Malini and Reena Roy.

Sattam Oru Iruttarai was remade in Telugu as Chattaniki Kallu Levu, in Malayalam as Maattuvin Chattangale and in Kannada as Nyaya Ellide. In 2012, another Tamil remake of the film was released under the same title.
