Govinda is believed to have ruled Bollywood as an actor during the 90s. Debuting with the film Love 86, the actor has appeared in over 130 films. He started as an action hero, but later became successful as a comic actor. Govinda starred in lead roles in several superhits and hits like Aankhen, Raja Babu, Coolie No 1, Hero No 1, Deewana Mastana, Dulhe Raja, Bade Miyan Chote Miyan, Anari No 1, Jodi No 1, and Hassena Maan Jayegi. At the peak of his career, he never hesitated to sign good films but sometimes his judgments went a little off. It includes the evergreen Hindi show, Mahabharat and the superhit Gadar.
Govinda, who gave back-to-back hits, never had the time to read the script and used to complete the shots on his own. As per media reports, after his Bollywood debut, He signed a dozen films during which he fell ill and had to leave many others. Govinda used to visit Rajshri studios to get work. At the onset of his acting career, he was offered the role of Abhimanyu in BR Chopra’s Mahabharat. At the same time, his uncle began production on the movie Tan-Badan and awarded him the leading role. Due to this, Govinda thought it was suitable to launch his career in the film industry and declined to act in BR Chopra’s serial.
Govinda was also the first choice for the lead role in Gadar. In Aap Ki Adalat, the actor admitted that he was offered the role in Gadar but he refused it due to abusive language in it. When the film was released, there was no such use of language. Anil Sharma’s statement on this issue also went viral when he said that Govinda was never offered the film in the first place and it was a misunderstanding on his part.
After several box office flops in the 2000s, his later commercial successes included Bhagam Bhag, Partner, Life Partner, and Holiday. In 2015 Govinda became a judge on Zee TV’s dance-contest program, Dance India Dance Super Mom Season 2. Govinda was last seen in the film Rangeela Raja in 2019.
