After the blockbuster Sholay, Ramesh Sippy made a film that created a sensation at the box office. The film was called Shakti which was released on October 1, 1982. In this film, Dilip Kumar and Amitabh Bachchan were seen together on screen for the first time. But you will be surprised to know that Amitabh Bachchan had said no to this film.

In the film Shakti, the two actors played the role of father and son on screen. Rakhee and Smita Patil acted in the film along with Amitabh Bachchan and Dilip Kumar. The story of the film was written by Salim-Javed. When Ramesh Sippy narrated the story of the film to Amitabh Bachchan, he liked it very much. When Amitabh Bachchan asked Ramesh Sippy about his father’s role in the film, the filmmaker told him that Dilip Kumar would be playing that role.

When Amitabh Bachchan heard this, he decided not to do the film. Because he thought how can he work with such a great artist? He shared his feelings with Ramesh Sippy and decided not to do the film. As soon as Dilip Kumar came to know about it, he called the actor and said, “Amit, don’t say no to this film. I want to do a film with you and learn a lot from you”.

Amitabh Bachchan’s eyes got moist when he heard these words from Dilip Kumar and he could not refuse the film. Amitabh Bachchan said in an interview that he forgets the dialogue as soon as he looks into Dilip Kumar’s eyes.

Dilip Kumar went on to win the Filmfare Award under the Best Actor category for Shakti. Amitabh Bachchan was also nominated under this category for the Filmfare Award. He failed to win this prestigious prize. Shakti turned out to be the first and the last film for both Amitabh Bachchan and Dilip Kumar. Despite the inclusion of a stellar star cast and writer duo Javed Akhtar and Salim Khan, this film failed to evoke a great response from the audience.
