This article contains spoilers for the 8th episode of WandaVision.
Each week, a new episode of WandaVision drops, changing everything we thought we knew about the show. In episode 7, we found out that the nosy neighbour Agnes is actually the witch Agatha Harkness, who in the Marvel Comics is sort of a mentor to Wanda. While many eagle-eyed fans had picked on the clues and predicted it, what they didn’t see coming was that episode 8 would actually go on a completely different tangent.
The new episode of WandaVision takes us to the very beginning. We see Agatha being put on a stake to be killed by a group of witches in Salem in 1693. Agatha tried to perform black magic, an act that betrayed her coven. In this scary scene, a group of witches, headed by her own mother, try to kill Agatha, but she overpowers and kills them instead with black magic. This is an early indicator that Agatha is a strong and dangerous enemy.
What follows is a confrontation between Agatha and Wanda. Wanda’s powers don’t work in Agatha’s basement because of a special spell. We find out the reason Agatha came to Wanda’s ‘hex’ or altered world in Westview is to see how Wanda is actually able to cast all the spells. Through her magic, Agatha takes Wanda to pivotal moments in her life, first when an air strike in Sokovia kills her parents, second, while she is being experimented on by Hydra, then in the Avengers compound where she is mourning her brother Pietro’s death, and finally after she comes back to life and sees Vision being disintegrated by SWORD. We see Wanda go to the New Jersey plot where Vision wanted to grow old with her and have an emotional breakdown, which causes her to unconsciously create the Hex or an altered reality in the town. She also creates her own Vision, as opposed to episode 5 where SWORD Chairman Tyler Hayward had said that Wanda actually stole Vision’s body.
In the last scene, we see Agatha putting a leash on Wanda’s twins Billy and Tommy. Through-out the episode we see Agatha looking and Wanda’s life and figuring out that she has been a witch ever since she was a child, without even knowing it. All that build-up leads to the epic scene, where she calls Wanda the Scarlett Witch for the very first time in the Marvel Cinematic Universe.
To understand why this is so important, let us go back to Avengers: Age of Ultron. In this 2015 film, we saw how Hydra created powers in Wanda and Pietro Maximoff, two radicalized twins who had volunteered to be experimented on, by using the Mind Stone in Loki’s Spectre. It gave Wanda a series of powers including Mind Control, Telekinesis, Disintegration, Psionic Energy Manipulation among others. Pietro, on the other hand, got super-speed. The story of Wanda and Pietro was changed in the MCU because Marvel Studios did not, then, have the cinematic rights to the Mutant characters. Hence, these characters were shown to derive their powers from experimentation by humans and not because they genetically had these superpowers. This is also why Wanda and Pietro were never called Scarlet Witch or Quicksilver, their superhero names, in the MCU films.

However, in WandaVision, we saw that changing at twice. In episode 5 we saw Evan Peters, who plays Quicksilver in the X-Men films appear in WandaVision. This was possible because of Marvel’s parent company Disney acquired 21st Century Fox and opened the possibility of Mutants appearing in the MCU. Hence when the X-Men’s version of Quicksilver made an appearance in MCU, it hinted a possible Multiverse story-line, where Mutants will be present.
In episode 8, however, Agatha points out to Wanda that when she was a child, she used magic to stop a drone from blasting and killing her and Pietro. In Avengers: Age of Ultron, it was shown that the drone belonged to Stark Industries and hence she hated Tony Stark. Wanda had told Tony that they were under the rubble for two days, afraid that their movement will cause the bomb to go off. However, Agatha pointing out that Wanda already had superpowers before being experimented on, means she herself is a mutant!
The fact that MCU made it canon to call Wanda the Scarlet Witch shows that new and interesting story-lines are coming our way. It also means more members of the X-Men franchise might make an appearance in MCU. In the comics, Magneto is the father of Wanda and Pietro, so is it a stretch to expect Michael Fassbender or the legendary Ian Mckellen to appear in the MCU shows of movies?
That is not all that the episode told us. We also got to know that the shady Tyler Hayward has actually brought the old Vision back to life. This means in the last episode Wanda might actually be fighting this new weaponized Vision! It has also been predicted that Doctor Strange and the mega-villain Mephisto will make an appearance in the finale.
There are infinite possibilities as to what can happen in the last episode of WandaVision. It is hard to wait an entire week for the finale, but it will be worth it!
