Glen Powell shared a brief update about the third Top Gun film during a live chat on a recent podcast. The actor was in conversation with Josh Horowitz, on a recent episode of the Happy Sad Confused podcast with his Twisters co-star Daisy Edgar-Jones. When asked about which of his projects would come first, a continuation of Normal People with Edgar-Jones or Top Gun 3 with Powell – he answered the latter. “I mean, I have a date," Powell revealed, possibly indicating that a start date is fixed for Top Gun 3. However, he didn’t clarify whether this date was for prepping, like hitting the gym or pilot school or for the actual shooting of the film.
When asked for more details about Top Gun 3, Powell responded, “Absolutely not."

Back in January, the news surfaced ahead of Powell’s appearance at the Sundance Film Festival for his film Hit Man that Paramount Pictures was officially working on a third Top Gun movie. The plan includes Powell reuniting with his Top Gun: Maverick co-stars Tom Cruise and Miles Teller. Powell mentioned to Variety at Sundance that once the news broke online, he received numerous text messages full of question marks.
“People looked at me like I knew what was going on. There is going to be some fun stuff being announced soon…but it was confidential to me. I talk to Joseph Kosinski, Cruise and Jerry Bruckheimer all the time. There is stuff happening and it sounds very exciting. I don’t know when I’ll be going back…I’m sure there is a jet waiting for me sometime in the future," he told Variety.
Powell played Jake Hangman Seresin in Top Gun: Maverick, which was released in May 2022 and went on to become the 11th highest-grossing movie ever at that time.
In January, Variety reported that Paramount has asked Top Gun: Maverick’s co-writer Ehren Kruger to work on a script for a sequel to the blockbuster. The studio also hopes that Top Gun: Maverick director Joseph Kosinski will return for another installment, potentially featuring Cruise’s younger co-stars Miles Teller and Glen Powell.
Top Gun: Maverick is also Tom Cruise’s biggest film to date. Meanwhile, Powell’s box office success continues with hits like the romantic comedy Anyone but You and Twisters, which just opened at the domestic box office with a massive $81.5 million.
