In 2011, Aanand L Rai, Kangana Ranaut, and R Madhavan came together for the first time for Tanu Weds Manu, which went on to become a sleeper hit at the box office. Four years later, the trio reunited for the sequel, which not only became a massive blockbuster but also set the record as the highest-grossing Hindi film led by a female protagonist. Since then, there’s been ongoing speculation about Tanu Weds Manu 3, although the makers have remained silent on the matter. However, Pinkvilla has now revealed that Aanand L Rai and his writing partner, Himanshu Sharma, have finalized the plot for the third installment.
According to sources familiar with the project, Tanu Weds Manu 3 will seamlessly pick up where the previous films left off. “It’s a sequel in the true sense, and the creators have found a story that naturally lends itself to completing the trilogy. Like the first two films, the third will be a blend of humor, romance, and drama, remaining faithful to the original world. The basic concept is locked, and the goal is to begin shooting in the second half of 2025,” shared a source close to the development.
The source also revealed that this time, Kangana Ranaut will take on a triple role, while R Madhavan continues with his singular role. “Kangana is thrilled to take on her first triple role and is looking forward to a full narration from Aanand L Rai. This will be an exciting challenge, allowing her to explore new dimensions as a performer,” added the insider. For those who may not know, Kangana played a double role in Tanu Weds Manu Returns.
Filming is expected to begin around July or August 2025, once Aanand L Rai finishes his current project, Tere Ishk Mein, with Dhanush and Kriti Sanon. In the meantime, Kangana is preparing for the release of Emergency. Tanu Weds Manu 3 is anticipated to be a major box-office draw in 2026, continuing the franchise’s flawless success at the box office.
Earlier, in a chat with News18 Showsha, Aanand revealed that he ‘definitely’ has plans to take the franchise forward. ”Tanu Weds Manu is a kind of franchise that demands a part three. The reason being, those characters are so beautiful, and they were played so beautifully by Madhavan and Kangana. Those characters became a little bigger than the story itself,” he said.
The director further revealed that there were no plans to make a sequel to Tanu Weds Manu initially. ”With Tanu Weds Manu Returns, we introduced a new character, Datto. These characters are all asking for a third part. The minute we have a great story—the story that Tanu, Manu, and Datto deserve—we’ll go for it,” he added.
Talking about the type of story he was looking for Tanu Weds Manu 3, he further said, ”What I really search for is a unique man-woman relationship. The dynamics in Tanu Weds Manu were different from Raanjhanaa, just as Raanjhanaa was different from Atrangi Re, and Atrangi Re is very different from Haseen Dillruba. As a director and producer, I feel the need to explore a new love story each time. I search for a certain kind of edginess. In Tanu Weds Manu, I showed a girl who drinks and smokes, and as a director, I didn’t judge her—and that’s why my audience didn’t judge her.”
