In Shah Rukh Khan’s first movie with director Sanjay Leela Bhansali, the 2002 film Devdas, he played the role of a literary alcoholic. In some scenes, Shah Rukh actually drank alcohol because he thought it was necessary for his character to look authentic. In a recent interview, his co-actor from the film, Tiku Talsania, revealed that Shah Rukh would drink during filming because he believed it was necessary for the character. Tiku played the role of Dharamdas in the film.

Talking to Digital Commentary, Tiku said, “We were shooting in the afternoon under the scorching sun and he was taking shots of rum one after another. I said, ‘What are you doing? We have to act’.” Shah Rukh Khan said, “‘Sir acting toh ho jayegi. Aankhon mein sharab dikhti nahi hai na, uska kya (Sir, acting will happen. But the inebriation won’t reflect in my eyes. What about that?).”

Complimenting Shah Rukh Khan, Tiku said that it is ‘fantastic’. “Aankh mein sharab dikhni chahiye na. (Acts drunk) kar lenge par woh aankhon mein nahi dikhegi sharab toh kaise hoga? (You can pretend to be drunk, but if the alcohol doesn’t reflect in his eyes, how would the scene look authentic?) And for Devdas, not having daaru (alcohol) in his eyes…”

Tiku then described Shah Rukh as a “genius” who “puts a lot of effort into his character.” He also recalled how Shah Rukh would come to the set of Devdas with his own plan for the shots, even though Bhansali was the director.

Earlier, actor Milind Gunaji, who also starred in Devdas, shared a touching story about how SRK showed concern for him during a challenging time. In an interview with Rajshri Unplugged, Milind revealed that he tragically lost his father while filming the movie, and Shah Rukh Khan was prepared to stop the shoot to support him and make sure he was okay. The actor recalled, “I remember Shah Rukh, he is such a gentleman and a nice person. He used to come and sit with me. He told me that he was feeling sorry about this and said that if something needs to stop, they will stop. He said that there won’t be any problem, and they can stop the shoot. Sanjay sir also told me the same thing.”

Devdas went on to become a blockbuster.
