In 2015, Rekha and Jaya Bachchan surprised everyone when they shared a warm hug at an award show. The two veteran actresses were attending the Star Screen Awards when Amitabh Bachchan won the Best Actor award for the movie, Piku. Upon the announcement, Big B headed towards the stage to accept the award. However, Rekha ran towards Jaya and hugged her. The two then watched Amitabh accepting the award.
Rekha and Amitabh Bachchan worked together in several films including Muqaddar Ka Sikandar, Mr Natwarlal and Ganga Ki Saugandh. On the other hand, Rekha, Big B and Jaya shared the screen in Yash Chopra’s 1981 movie Silsila.
Amitabh Bachchan and Jaya Bachchan had first met on the set of Hrishikesh Mukherjee’s 1971 film Guddi. They then got married on June 3, 1973, and are still going strong.
When Rekha appeared on Simi Garewal’s Rendezvous in 2001, she was directly asked if she was ever in love with Amitabh Bachchan. Back then, the veteran actress called the question “dumb” and answered it cryptically saying there is no person in the country who does not love Big B.
“Absolutely. Duh, that’s a dumb question. I have yet to come across a single man, woman, child who can help but fall completely, passionately, insanely, desperately, hopelessly in love with him. So why should I be singled out? What do I deny? I’m not in love with him? Of course I am. Duniya bhar ka love aap le lijiyega and add some more – I feel that for that person. Bottomline,” Rekha had said.
However, Rekha had denied any personal connection to Amitabh Bachchan saying, “There was never a personal connection with him, that’s the truth. Never ever. There was no truth to the controversies and speculation.”
In the same interview, Rekha had also hailed Jaya Bachchan. She praised her for her strength and dignity and admitted that she “admired” her. “Didibhai is much more mature, much more together. I’ve yet to come across a woman who is so together. She’s got so much dignity, so much class. She’s got a lot of strength. I admire that woman. We had an association before the so-called rumours and the media messed up the whole image. We were living in the same building and we had a relationship. She was my Didibhai, she still is – no matter what happens nobody can take that away. Thank God she realises that too. Whenever we meet she’s very sweet – she’s not just civil, she’s just herself,” Rekha said.
