The Tamil film industry boasts of leading ladies like Nayanthara, Trisha Krishnan, Keerthy Suresh and many more, stealing the show with their screen presence and talent. However, none of these names was the first actress to hit a 100-crore in the Tamil industry. Then who is it?
The actress to feature in Tamil cinema’s first-ever 100-crore club film is Shriya Saran. She has given numerous blockbuster hits in her career, not only in the South Indian film industry but also in Bollywood.
She starred in the superstar Rajinikanth-led Sivaji: The Boss, one of the biggest releases in the country to date. Directed by S Shankar, the film hit the theatres on June 15, 2007. As per the reports, after its release, the film held the title of the biggest film in the country. It starred Shriya Saran as the female lead. Sivaji was made on a budget of Rs 60 to Rs 80 crore and went on to collect more than Rs 125 to Rs 160 crore at the global box office.
More reports state that Shriya’s role, which portrays the male lead’s love interest, was initially offered to Aishwarya Rai. he could not be a part of the film due to scheduling, and the role eventually went to Shriya.
Shriya debuted in the film industry with the Telugu film Ishtam, released in 2001. In the following years, she appeared in some of the biggest names in the industry like Chiranjeevi, Nagarjuna and Prabhas.
Some of her most popular works include the 2015 film Drishyam, starring Ajay Devgn. The Nishikant Kamat’s directorial went on to become a commercial hit and garnered a lot of critical acclaim. Shriya was seen in the role of Nandini Pilgaonkar, one of the main suspects in the murder and Vijay Salgaonkar’s (played by Ajay Devgn) wife. The film collected a reported Rs 147 crore at the box office worldwide.
The actress featured in successful films like Santosham, Tagore, Enakku 20 Unakku, Chatrapathi and many more.
