After Samantha Ruth Prabhu, Dr. Cyriac Abby Philips, known as The Liver Doc, called out actress Nayanthara for her Instagram post praising the medicinal values of hibiscus flower tea. In response, Nayanthara posted a cryptic note on Instagram Stories. Quoting Mark Twain, she wrote, “Never argue with stupid people, they will drag you down to their level and then beat you with experience.” earlier, she had tagged her nutritionist and emphasised that hibiscus flower tea has been used in Ayurveda for its high antioxidant content and benefits in controlling diabetes, high cholesterol, high blood pressure, and heart-related ailments.
The Liver Doc had earlier taken to X (formerly Twitter) to debunk these claims, citing several research papers that argue there isn’t sufficient evidence to support them. He wrote that more scientific proof is needed before making definitive health claims about hibiscus flowers.
“This is cinema actress Nayantara who has more than twice the following of the other actress Samantha miselading her 8.7 million followers on a supplement called hibiscus tea. If she had stopped at hibiscus tea is kind of tasty, that would have been ok. But no, they have to go ahead and blow their health-illiteracy trumpet and also claim that hibiscus tea is helpful in diabetes, high blood pressure, acne, antibacterial and protects against the flu. Well, none of the above claims have been proven,” he wrote.
Following the note by the doctor, Nayanthara deleted her post. This is not the first time that the doctor has called out a celebrity. Samantha Ruth Prabhu’s post about using hydrogen peroxide nebulisation initiated a debate online, leading to the Liver Doc slamming the actress and calling her a “health illiterate”. The doctor had demanded a stern punishment against Samantha and stated that she should be put in jail. “In a rational and scientifically progressive society, this woman will be charged with endangering public health and fined or put behind bars. She needs help or a better advisor in her team,” he had written.
