Malayalam actor Mohan Raj, who is popularly known by his stage name Keerikkadan Jose, passed away at his residence on Thursday, September 3. He took his last breath at the age of 70. He was undergoing treatment for multiple illnesses at his home in Kanjiramkulam, Kerala, as per media reports. He gained huge fame after he played the role of Keerikkadan Jose in the film Kireedam. The film starred Mohanlal, Parvathi, Jagathy Sreekumar, Murali, Jagadish and Yadu Krishnan in prominent roles. Several well-known faces of the film industry paid homage to the great actor. Actor Mohanlal shared a special post on his Facebook handle along with Mohan Raj’s photo to pay tribute to the legendary star. He wrote, “To be called and known by the name of the character is a blessing that only an actor who has the great gift of acting success gets. Beloved Mohan Raj, who played the immortal character of Keerikkadan Jose in Kireedam, has left us. I still remember him standing in front of the camera with his head held high as Sethu’s opponent, like it was yesterday. A tearful farewell to my dear friend who maintained goodness and gentleness in his personal life," when translated to English.
Actor Mammootty also shared a picture of Mohan Raj on Facebook to pay tribute to him. Posting the picture, Mammootty captioned it, “Tributes to Mohanraj," when translated to English.
Chief Minister of Kerala Pinarayi Vijayan and Saji Cherian, Minister of Culture and Youth Affairs, Government of Kerala, extended their heartfelt condolences mentioning that his passing away is a big loss to the Indian film industry.
Mohan Raj has been an active face in the Indian film industry for more than three decades. He is known for his villainous roles. Before coming to the entertainment industry, he worked as an Assistant Enforcement Officer in the Enforcement Directorate. While he was working with the central government department, Mohan Raj was offered the role of Keerikkadan Jose. He accepted the role without taking permission from his senior officials, as per government norms which led to his suspension from service. In 2015, he took voluntary retirement from his service to pursue acting.
