Get ready for a tidal wave of excitement as Disney’s Moana 2 paddles into theatres this Thanksgiving! The much-awaited sequel just hit long-lead tracking, and it’s making quite the splash with predictions soaring over Rs 840 crore for its opening week from Wednesday to Sunday. Within that, it’s projected to reel in between Rs 630 crore and Rs 690 crore from Friday to Sunday alone, according to the tracking gurus at Quorum. Remember the original Moana? It opened back in 2016 reportedly with a robust Rs 690 crore over five days and ultimately sailed to a hefty Rs 2,085 crore domestically.
If the forecasts hold, Moana 2 could mark an epic comeback for Disney. They’ve ruled the Thanksgiving box office with animated gems, but it’s been a while since their last major hit – Frozen 2 back in 2019, which raked in an astonishing Rs 1,050 crore during the holiday weekend, the biggest of any film in the US and Canada.
In the early estimates for three-day openings, Moana 2 is already ahead of Universal’s Wicked: Part One and Paramount’s Gladiator II, according to Quorum.
An industry insider observing the under-25 female crowd has said, “This is the Frozen crowd." While it seems that the guys might be lagging in interest, history shows they can bounce back—just look at Inside Out 2, which still debuted with a strong Rs 1,294 crore, making it the second-largest domestic opening of 2024.
The excitement for Moana 2 aligns perfectly with its marketing wave. The first trailer for the sequel became Disney’s most-watched animated trailer ever, racking up jaw-dropping 17.8 crore views within 24 hours. Views are solely from online across TikTok, YouTube, X, Instagram, Facebook and Snapchat. It reportedly left behind Inside Out 2 (Rs 15.7 crore) and Frozen 2 (Rs 11.6 crore).
Earlier this year, Disney CEO Bob Iger confirmed that Moana 2 was officially on its way, originally born from plans for a Disney+ series. The sequel boasts a talented crew, with directors Dave Derrick Jr., Jason Hand, and Dana Ledoux Miller at the helm. The musical magic comes from Grammy-winning artists like Abigail Barlow and Emily Bear, along with Grammy nominee Opetaia Foa’i and three-time Grammy winner Mark Mancina. Auli’i Cravalho is back as the spirited Moana and Dwayne Johnson returns as the lovable demigod Maui, reports Deadline.
But here’s the catch: Moana 2, along with Wicked and Gladiator II, will be squaring off for those coveted IMAX screens over the holiday. It’s going to be a battle of the blockbusters on November 27.
