New Delhi: It was in 1996 that Tom cruise became an internationally recognizable action star thanks to the tremendous critical and commercial success enjoyed by ‘Mission Impossible’. In the years that followed as many as three sequels were released and as luck would have it all of them proved to be runaway hits at the box office.
Perhaps that is why expectations were at an all time when the latest film from the franchise—‘Rogue Nation’-- arrived in theatres earlier today.
And to say the very least this Christopher McQuarrie-directed venture not only lives to the high standards set by its predecessors but also helps the franchise scale new heights. Here is a look at why ‘Rogue Nation’ is a must watch for fans of fast-faced yet emotionally compelling action-thrillers.
Tom Cruise at his best: In many ways ‘Rogue Nation’ serves as strong proof of why Tom Cruise is still one of the most popular names in the highly competitive world of Hollywood. The actor, who made his debut nearly three decades ago, delivers an intense performance and pulls off some mesmerizing action sequences with absolute ease. Moreover, the 53-year-old does a splendid job in the dramatic/ emotional scenes. His subdued yet powerful act, especially towards the climax, goes a long a long way in adding a touch of tenderness to the onscreen action.
It gives us the best of both worlds: The central character of ‘Rogue Nation’ Ethan Hunt may come across as the very personification of machismo thanks to his ability of going toe-to-toe with countless menacing enemies while facing adversity with effortless ease. However, the reality is a bit different. The makers of this thriller have quite successfully humanized hunt through a series of scenes in which he is beaten down. At the same time, at no point is he shown to be ‘styling and profiling’ like agent 007 in the ‘; James Bond’ series. On the contrary, the character comes across as a tortured soul who is fighting to keep alive a cherished dream. As such, ‘Rogue Nation’ turns out to be a highly relatable and believe affair.
Strong emotional connect: Apart from giving movie buffs a very true to life hero, the makers of ‘Rogue Nation’ have also quite successfully carved out a thriller that goes beyond the twists and turns associated with the genre. Yes there are plenty of chase sequences and gravity-defying stunts. But at the end of the day ‘Rogue Nation explores the strong bond between two friends. As a result, the narrative has some strong emotional undercurrents as well. Furthermore the emotional quotient is upped further courtesy the strong bonding between Cruise and Simon Pegg. In fact on that front it is a bit reminiscent of Paul Walker’s swan song ‘Furious 7’.
Witty dialogues serve as icing on the cake: In addition to ensuring a strong emotional connect, the team behind ‘Rogue Nation must also be praised for coming up with a screenplay which contains a scoop of humour. The use of witty and catchy dialogues like ‘desperate times desperate measures’ create light moments. This in turn establishes ‘Rogue Nation’ as the complete package.
