Manoj Bajpayee Doesn't Work With Me, Says Anubhav Sinha: 'At One Time, We Had Atta for Just 2 Rotis'
Anubhav Sinha recalls his 35-year friendship with Manoj Bajpayee, their shared struggles and the deep admiration he has for Bajpayee's talent and journey.

Filmmaker Anubhav Sinha, known for his fearless approach to cinema and outspoken personality, recently opened up about his long-standing friendship with Manoj Bajpayee and their struggles in the early days. In a candid interview with Mukesh Chhabra for Mashable India, Sinha reflected on the challenges that aspiring actors face, citing Bajpayee’s story as a testament to persistence and passion.

Anubhav didn’t shy away from addressing the difficulties of breaking into the film industry. “Actors are in need of that one opportunity to showcase their talent. But are you preparing yourself for it?” he asked. He emphasised that education in the “school of life” is vital for actors. “If you haven’t read poems, know your history, or understand the politics around you, you can’t call yourself a good actor,” he added. For Sinha, honing one’s craft is essential. “Actors spend 85-90 percent of their time searching for an opportunity. Make that 15-20 percent, and instead, spend the rest on improving your craft.”

Anubhav fondly spoke about actors like Kumud Mishra and Manoj Pahwa, who have become indispensable in his projects. But his bond with Manoj Bajpayee, a name they haven’t yet collaborated with, was a particular highlight of the conversation. Sinha reminisced about their early days of struggle, when they had very little to survive on. “I’ve known him since 1989, from the time we had atta for just two rotis, and we used to share one each.”

Their journey from those difficult days to now being acclaimed names in the industry has only deepened their mutual admiration. Bajpayee recently called Anubhav after watching his Netflix series IC 814: The Kandahar Hijack, expressing immense pride and joy. “He called me at night to share his happiness, and then called again the next morning to say it all over again,” Sinha revealed.

Despite their decades-long friendship, the two have never worked together. “He doesn’t do my films. I know his logic, and I appreciate it,” Sinha admitted. He even offered Bajpayee a role in Bheed, but it didn’t materialise. Still, Anubhav continues to be in awe of his friend’s talent. “When I see any good work he does, I feel proud that I know him. He’s the kind of actor you’d want in every film,” he said.
