On October 18, his father, Geoff Payne, travelled to Buenos Aires, Argentina, to officially confirm his son’s identity.
Geoff Payne visited the CasaSur Palermo Hotel, where his son Liam tragically passed away. In several heart-wrenching photos and videos, Geoff was seen walking around a memorial created by Liam’s devoted fans outside the hotel. Flowers, letters, and photos were laid by fans to pay tribute to the late singer. According to Sky News, Geoff took a moment to pause and reflect, sharing an emotional silence with the fans who had gathered to honour Liam’s memory.
He even put on his glasses to read the tributes that the singer’s fans had written for him and picked up pictures of his son to kiss them. Liam’s father even took a moment to thank all the musician’s fans who gathered outside the hotel to pay tribute to him by holding candlelit vigils.
On October 16, Liam succumbed to his injuries after he reportedly fell from the balcony of the hotel. His family released a statement to CNN, saying, “We are heartbroken. Liam will forever live in our hearts, and we’ll remember him for his kind, funny and brave soul. We are supporting each other the best we can as a family and ask for privacy and space at this awful time.” Liam is survived by his parents, sisters and his 7-year-old child, Bear.
Meanwhile, Liam’s girlfriend, Kate Cassidy, with whom he travelled to Argentina for a trip, released a statement two days after the singer’s sudden demise. Describing the 31-year-old as an “angel,” she stated, “Thank you for all of the kind words and love that has been sent my way. I have been at a complete loss. Nothing about the past few days have felt real. I ask and pray that you’ll give me the grace and space to navigate this in private.” The influencer ended her note by remembering her boyfriend, “Liam, my angel. You are everything. I want you to know I loved you unconditionally and completely. I will continue to love you for the rest of my life. I love you, Liam.”
On the other hand, Liam’s former One Direction bandmates, Harry Styles, Louis Tomlinson, Niall Horan and Zayn Malik, released a joint statement and individual tributes to the singer through their respective social media handles.
