Shah Rukh Khan and Kajol’s film Dilwale Dulhania Le Jayenge is among one of the most iconic movies in Hindi cinema. Dilwale Dulhania Le Jayenge (DDLJ) redefined romance in Indian cinema, blending traditional values with modern sensibilities. This film was loved not only by Indian audiences but also by people abroad. The dialogues of the film and the iconic climax where the father of Kajol’s character, played by Amrish Puri finally allows his daughter to board the train with her lover is remembered even today. Another aspect of the 1995 film that makes it memorable is the melodious music scored by Jatin-Lalit.
Tujhe Dekha Toh Yeh Jaana Sanam remains the most popular song of the DDLJ album and it was sung by Kumar Sanu. However, almost three decades after the film’s release, Jatin Pandit has expressed his displeasure with Kumar Sanu over not acknowledging the composers and lyricists for the success of the song.
In a conversation with Bollywood Hungama, Lalit Pandit expressed concern that Kumar Sanu never acknowledged Anand Bakshi for writing the lyrics or Jatin-Lalit for composing the music. The music composer said, “It is not good on his part to continuously say, ‘Mera gaana hai, mera gaana hai (It is my song).”
Lalit Pandit lamented that after a song becomes a hit, it is not only the singer who gets the credit. Both the lyricist and the composer play a very important role in it. He further said, “The composer is the master of the song. He decides who will sing his song. This was the best song of Kumar Sanu’s career, so it was not good to not give credit to Anand Bakshi and us.”
He also said that DDLJ was the last time Kumar Sanu worked with Yash Raj Films. He added that something went wrong between the singer and Yash Chopra and hence Yash Chopra never made him sing in his films again. Lalit Pandit further said that it was common for composers to have small squabbles with singers during the recording process. He said that they had tiffs with Udit Narayan as well but the latter always gave them due credit for his hit songs. Lalit Pandit recently composed music for Panchayat 3.
