While we celebrate International Women’s Day on March 8, it is important to remember that forwarding messages isn’t enough when we keep testing women through unrealistic standards. Many women often feel pressurised about their clothing, body, choice of profession in cities large and small. Female celebrities are especially put under a microscope with the public and media dissecting every ounce of extra fat on their bodies. One such celebrity is the very talented actress Vidya Balan, who revealed the constant focus around her weight led her to “hate” her own body.
Balan, in an earlier interview with Times of India, shared that her weight was a national issue at one point, leading her to feelings of hatred in the body she lived.
“I have always been a fat girl; I wouldn’t say that I am at a stage where my fluctuating weight doesn’t bother me anymore at all… I have had hormonal issues all my life. For the longest time, I hated my body. I thought it had betrayed me,” she said.
The thought of being fat and being scrutinised would lead her to get even more bloated up. She would be angry and frustrated all the time.
It took her some time to get over these insecurities but, in the moment, the feeling would trouble her deeply. However, being the strong woman that she is, Balan managed to pull through and is at a place in life where she no longer cares about what think of her hair length, thickness of arms or curves around her body.
She added how she acknowledges that her body is the vessel keeping her alive; as long as it’s working, she will be around—further adding that she has a lot of gratitude for her body. “It doesn’t matter what I have been through, I am alive because of this body. It’s blood and bones. With each day I have begun to love and accept myself more, but it’s not been easy. You have to fake it till you make it,” she exclaimed.
