Dev Patel, a British actor recently made his directorial debut with the film Monkey Man. Released in March, the film starred Sharlto Copley, Pitobash Tripathy, Vipin Sharma and Sobhita Dhulipala in prominent roles while Dev Patel played the lead role in the film. Monkey Man has received positive reviews from critics and has been given a verdict of ‘Hit’ at the box office. The actor Dev Patel who has donned the director cap now started his career with the blockbuster film Slumdog Millionaire in 2008. You will be surprised to know that this movie was initially offered to superstars like Shah Rukh Khan, Govinda and Amitabh Bachchan before finalising Anil Kapoor, Irrfan Khan and Dev Patel in the prominent roles for the film.
Slumdog Millionaire is directed by Danny Boyle. The lead pair Dev Patel and Frieda Pinto started their film career with this film. The story revolves around an 18-year-old boy, Jamal Malik, who lives in a slum area of Mumbai. He becomes a part of the quiz show and by answering every question, he becomes a millionaire overnight. But later he is accused of cheating and is caught by the police. During police interrogation, Jamal reveals how he gave correct answers to all the questions. As per the media reports, Shah Rukh Khan, Amitabh Bachchan and Govinda were offered the role of the host of the Slumdog Millionaire show in the film. However, all of them turned down the offer which eventually went to Anil Kapoor.
As per IMDB, the maker’s first choice for the role of Prem Kumar was Shah Rukh Khan. He turned down the offer because at that time he was hosting a game show Kaun Banega Crorepati (KBC) in India and did not want to give the impression that the real show was a fraud by playing a fraudulent host in the movie. The reasons for rejection by Amitabh Bachchan and Govinda are still unknown.
Dev Patel and Freida Pinto’s Slumdog Millionaire proved to be a blockbuster after its release and did a business of Rs 3,145 crore worldwide. Not only this, the film also created a stir at the Oscar Awards. Slumdog Millionaire won eight out of ten Oscar Awards for which it was nominated including Best Picture and Best Director. The music of the film was composed by AR Rahman. At the same time, the lyricist was Gulzar.
