There have been many blockbuster thriller movies made in Bollywood, starting from Vidya Balan starrer suspense thriller Kahaani to Shraddha Kapoor, Rajkummar Rao and Pankaj Tripathi’s horror comedy film Stree. All these movies kept its audience at the edge of their seat and made them enjoy the magic of cinema. In 2018, a black comedy and thriller film was released and it was also a blockbuster. The name of the movie is Andhadhun. It was directed by Sriram Raghavan. Andhadhun follows Akash (Ayushmann Khurrana), a seemingly blind pianist, who gets entangled in a murder mystery after witnessing a crime. He is hired by a former actor’s wife, Simi (Tabu), to play at her house, where he unknowingly becomes a witness to the actor’s murder. Akash’s blindness is revealed to be an act, leading to a tense cat-and-mouse game as Simi tries to cover up the crime. The film is packed with twists as Akash’s deception and survival instincts come into play, making the plot unpredictable and gripping.
The film is famous for its unpredictable plot twists, dark humour, and exceptional performances, especially by Ayushmann Khurrana, Tabu, and Radhika Apte. It explores themes of morality, perception and survival, with the narrative constantly blurring the lines between reality and illusion.
Ayushmann Khurana’s effortless performance bagged him the National Award for Best Actor. Ayushmann was not the first choice of the producers. Anil Kapoor’s son Harshvardhan Kapoor was originally offered the role. After Harshvardhan refused to act in the film, the film went to Ayushmann.
The total budget of Andhadhun was just Rs 32 crore. Released in October 2018, the film grossed Rs 440 crore worldwide. The movie has an IMDB rating of 8.2 stars. It was also remade in other leading languages of India. The film was remade in Telugu as Maestro, starring Nithiin and Nabha Natesh. It follows the core plot of the original with local adaptations. Recently, the movie was also released in Tamil with the name Andhagan, starring Prashanth. This movie also received positive feedback just like the original one.
