AR Rahman gained global recognition for his Oscar-winning song ‘Jai Ho,’ featured in Danny Boyle’s film Slumdog Millionaire. However, not widely known is that the song was initially composed for Subhash Ghai’s movie Yuvvraaj, starring Salman Khan, Anil Kapoor, Zayed Khan, and Katrina Kaif, for which AR Rahman also composed the music in 2008. In a recent conversation with ANI, Ghai disclosed that Rahman originally recorded the song for Yuvvraaj but later felt it wouldn’t suit the film.
“That Jai Ho song was made for Yuvvraaj. We recorded it but after recording, I felt that it won’t work for us in that situation. Rahman gave the song to that (Slumdog Millionaire) film. It is his composition,” Ghai said. The song was supposedly going to be filmed on Zayed Khan as Ghai previously shared the same with The Times of India. He said that he “happily gave the song” to the composer as “it was needed” for Danny Boyle’s film. “I felt the song was slightly too soft and subtle for the aggressive character (Zayed Khan). I’m glad they could use it,” he said.
Ghai and Rahman first worked in Taal, where Ghai claimed to be the first to approach Rahman for composing music in Hindi movies. Rahman was initially set to work on Yaadein, but due to his commitment to the musical Bombay Dreams, he couldn’t continue with the project. Even for Ghai’s film Kisna, Rahman could only find time to compose a few tunes, and the album was co-composed by Ismail Darbar. Rahman revealed in an earlier interview that he composed music for two of Ghai’s films, Shikast and Motherland, but both projects were eventually shelved.
