Tech giant Apple is moving deeper into TV production with increasing fervor, having added the director of La La Land and Whiplash to its roster of high-profile collaborators. Damien Chazelle will write and direct each episode of a new series for Apple. Project specifics are tightly guarded, save for Chazelle's involvement.
However, Chazelle underlines Apple's commitment to producing original episodic content, and he joins a number of other high-profile names who have already signed on. Reese Witherspoon has three series in development for Apple through her production company Hello Sunshine.
Are You Sleeping is based on Kathleen Barber's novel of the same name, a fictional story following a true-crime podcast host (Octavia Spencer) as she investigates a decade-old murder case. Then there's a comedy drama about the on- and off-screen antics at a morning TV show, made in collaboration with Friends star and Cake lead (and executive producer) Jennifer Aniston. Most recently, Witherspoon and Bridesmaids and Despicable Me breakout star Kristen Wiig struck a deal to create a 10-episode comedy based on Curtis Sittenfeld's April 2018 short story collection You Think It, I'll Say It.
Apple has also commissioned interior design and architecture series Home, futuristic drama See -- a sci-fi space drama from the developer of Battlestar Galactica, and a new series of anthology series Amazing Stories with Bryan Fuller of Star Trek: Discovery and Hannibal at the helm.
Chazelle has already shaken hands with Netflix to act as executive producer and occasional director on board multilingual musical drama The Eddy.
