It’s confirmed! Disney’s beloved franchise The Princess Diaries is being renewed with a third installment. Hours after the director Adele Lim confirmed to a media portal that The Princess Diaries 3 is in the works, Anne Hathaway dropped a post on social media, expressing her delight for the upcoming project. Comprising a video, the post was captioned, “Miracles happen. Back to Genovia with @adeleblim @disney @somewherepictures. The fairy tale continues.”
The video opens with Anne Hathaway sitting comfortably in a chair in what seems to be a park. As she puts up one finger at a time, the clip cuts to a scene from the series where her character, upon hearing that she is Princess of Genovia, reacts saying, “Shut up”. Next, the clip showcases another scene featuring Julie Andrews, who also reacts similarly and says, “Shut Up.” Julie played Anne’s on-screen grandma in The Princess Diaries. The actress, then, lifts three fingers and repeats the reaction. She also added the song Miracles Happen (When You Believe) by Myra in the background.
Soon after the video was posted, fans flooded the comments section expressing their joy and excitement. A fan said, “I’m seated. quite frankly I’ve never been more sat!!!” “So wonderful, my heart can’t take it!” added another. A fan also remarked, “We need this. Best news of the whole year.”
Adele Lim who has come on board to direct the project was quoted by Variety as saying, “As a diehard fan of the original ‘Princess Diaries,’ I’m beyond excited to be a part of bringing the third iteration of this beloved franchise to life. We look forward to celebrating its core tenants of female power, joy and mentorship with audiences worldwide.”
The first two movies of the franchise The Princess Diaries and The Princess Diaries 2: Royal Engagement were released in 2001 and 2004 respectively. Both films are currently available for streaming on Disney+. Back in 2022, reports suggested that a third Princess Diaries film was in the making with screenwriter Aadrita Mukerji as the writer. Aadrita is known for her work in Supergirl and Quantum Leap. Additionally, Debra Martin Chase, the producer on the first two installments, will also reportedly return to bankroll the upcoming project.
