In Sanatan Dharma, the festival of Mahashivratri is celebrated with great fervour, eagerly anticipated by devotees of Lord Shiva. According to the Hindu calendar, Mahashivratri falls on the Chaturdashi Tithi of Krishna Paksha in the month of Phalgun. This year, Mahashivratri will be observed on March 8, commencing at 09:57 p.m. and concluding on March 9 at 06:17 p.m. The auspicious occasion commemorates the divine union of Lord Shiva and Goddess Parvati.
Recently, Ayodhya’s esteemed astrologer, Neeraj Bhardwaj, shared insights with Local 18 regarding the special significance of Mahashivratri in Sanatan Dharma. Bhardwaj highlighted auspicious signs associated with Lord Shiva that are believed to bring good fortune when witnessed:
- Darshan of Snake: According to Bhardwaj, sighting a black snake or any snake before Mahashivratri is considered highly auspicious. It is believed that encountering Lord Shiva’s snake symbolises blessings and good luck.
- Rudraksha: The sighting of Rudraksha, revered by Lord Shiva, on Mahashivratri is deemed auspicious. Keeping Rudraksha in a safe place before Shivratri is said to invite happiness and prosperity into the household.
- Belpatra with 5 Leaves: Belpatra, an essential offering in Lord Shiva’s worship, holds significant importance. While traditionally three-leaf Belpatra is offered, the sighting of a rare five-leaf Belpatra before Mahashivratri is considered highly fortunate. This occurrence is believed to indicate auspiciousness and is associated with Lord Shiva’s five divine aspects, representing creation, preservation, destruction, absorption and grace.
Bhardwaj also emphasised the rarity of encountering a five-leaf Belpatra, further enhancing its sacred significance. This sacred leaf holds deep symbolism, embodying the divine essence of Lord Shiva’s multifaceted nature.
As Mahashivratri approaches, devotees eagerly await the opportunity to partake in rituals, prayers and offerings dedicated to Lord Shiva. The festival serves as a time for spiritual reflection, seeking blessings, and fostering devotion to the divine couple, Lord Shiva and Goddess Parvati. Observing these auspicious signs associated with Mahashivratri is believed to invite divine blessings and prosperity into one’s life.
