The Indian Meteorological Department recently issued a red alert for some states including Rajasthan, Delhi, Punjab, Haryana, Chandigarh and Madhya Pradesh, as severe heatwave continues in many parts of the country. This week, the temperature in the national capital even crossed 50 degrees Celsius.
As the temperature has increased in recent days, people are facing several problems because of the heatwave. Heat stroke, heat exhaustion, cramps, rashes and severe dehydration are some of the common illnesses associated with high temperatures. Extreme heat can affect people of all ages, from children to the elderly, and can exacerbate the above heat-related problems.
So it is important to follow some tips and precautions to keep you and your family safe during the heatwave. Follow these tips to stay safe during the extreme heat:
Maintain adequate hydration: Dehydration is common during the summer due to intense heat. Adequate amounts of water and fluids should be consumed to compensate for fluid loss during excessive sweating. Apart from water, you can drink coconut water, lemon water, cucumber juice, buttermilk and many other health drinks.
Don’t ignore the symptoms: Some of the common symptoms of heat-related illness include a higher-than-normal body temperature, nausea and vomiting, unusual sweating, dizziness and lightheadedness, muscle cramps, rashes, extreme mood swings and confusion. Seek immediate medical attention if you experience any of the above symptoms.
Wear breathable clothing: Wearing loose and light-coloured clothing during scorching hours will help prevent your body from overheating. And during summer, start wearing cotton clothes. Apply sunscreen whenever you go outside, regardless of whether it’s hot or mild. Use a hat or umbrella to protect the skin and deal with the heat.
Eat well: Regular inclusion of healthy foods in our daily diet will help us stay healthy during the summer. So make sure to include enough seasonal fruits and vegetables in your summer diet.
Avoid going outside: Avoid going outside as much as possible during the heat. Also, if you are stepping out, carry a water bottle with you. Avoid unnecessary travel during extreme heat and check weather reports regularly.
Avoid intense workouts: Daily exercise is very important for physical health, regardless of climatic conditions. But when the temperature is extreme, engaging in vigorous exercise can increase the body temperature. Therefore, it would be wise to engage in light, low-intensity exercises to avoid feeling too tired after your workouts.
Pay attention to children: Children are sometimes susceptible to heat-related illnesses. If you have children in your household, you need to pay more attention to their nutrition and hydration. Keep them in ventilated places. Even if the child shows mild symptoms, go to the doctor immediately.
