A redesigned Brit Award statuette has been unveiled for the 2018 edition of the British Phonographic Industry's annual pop music awards. The 2018 award is designed by British-Indian sculptor Anish Kapoor. Anish Kapoor follows in the footsteps of Zaha Hadid, whose design was used for the 2017 award. His award takes the form of a red, transparent rectangular casing, housing a representation of Britannia, a symbol of British unity.
Speaking of his design, Kapoor said, "I am pleased to have designed the Brit Award for 2018. Sculpture is often a process of positive and negative form. I have made the award using both." Prior to Hadid and Kapoor, previous Brit Awards designers include Pam Hogg, Tracey Emin, Philip Treacy, Damien Hirst, Peter Blake and Vivienne Westwood.
The Brit Awards ceremony -- a British equivalent to the USA's Grammy Awards -- will be held February 21, 2018.
In 1991, Anish Kapoor won the prestigious Turner Prize for British visual artists. He was also at the center of a scandal in 2015 when his 'Dirty Corner' sculpture was installed in the grounds of the Versailles Palace in France. Informally dubbed "the queen's vagina," the 60-meter long sculpture with evident sexual connotations was vandalized several times.
