The religious significance of the Tulsi plant in Hinduism is unrivalled. A Vaishnava legend relates the origin of the tulsi to the Samudra Manthana, the churning of the cosmic ocean by the devas and the asuras. Its religious significance has caused tulsi leaves to be held with reverence with medicinal properties for years. More than 100 ailments can be cured by tulsi leaves. Dr Sarvesh Kumar, Ayurvedacharya of Ayurveda College and Hospital, Lucknow, lists out some of the ways Tulsi or basil leaves can be consumed and what their health benefits are.

Tulsi and Honey: Ayurvedacharya Kumar says that Tulsi leaves can be effective in relieving children from colds, coughs and sore throats. To avail its benefits, you can use basil leaves with honey. For this, take 1 spoonful of basil leaves. Then mix about 1 teaspoon of honey in it and drink it.

Chew basil leaves: According to the expert, chewing basil leaves on an empty stomach can also be beneficial for health. To consume them, take soft basil leaves and chew them on an empty stomach. It aids in the body’s battle against inflammation, depression and oxidative stress. Basil improves digestion, detoxifies the body and helps maintain healthy skin thanks to its antioxidant and antibacterial qualities.

Basil Tea: Basil leaves can be consumed with tea as well. Its leaves can be added to plain herbal tea or milk tea if desired. To prepare, place half a spoonful of leaves in a cup of water, then add six to seven basil leaves and bring to a boil. After that, sip this tea after filtering it.

Decoction of Basil leaves: To extract oils, volatile organic compounds and other different chemical constituents from plant material, the process of decoction entails first drying the material, then mashing, slicing, or chopping it to allow for maximum solubility. It is then boiled in water before consumption.

Basil Juice: Basil juice can reduce problems ranging from sore throat to stomach pain. To consume it, take 10 to 15 basil leaves. Crush it and extract its juice. After this, mix this juice in 1 glass of water and drink it. This will reduce stomach problems and body weight.
