THIRUVANANTHAPURAM: The Vilappilsala waste treatment plant will be closed down and a zero waste management project will be implemented to deal with wastes generated in the Corporation limits, said Chief Minister Oommen Chandy here on Wednesday.“But the location of the new facility is yet to be decided. Reports stating that the unit would be located at Bonakkad is not correct, as it is only one of the sites under consideration of the government,’’ he told reporters at the Cabinet briefing.Replying to a query about the closing of the gate of the Vilappilsala plant at the instance of the local grama panchayat, Chandy said that though the government had urged for a three-month period to close down the plant permanently while opting for the zero waste management project elsewhere, representatives of the council walked out from the Wednesday’s talks without acceding to the request. ‘’They cannot be blamed for striking such a posture, as their experiences might have made them angry,’’ he said.“What has been zeroed in is a successful model implemented in Pune. Decentralised units are also part of the plan,’’ the CM said. ‘’The plan is to establish three such plants in various parts of the state. The system could be established without any hassles even in the heart of the city, according to experts handling it,’’ Chandy said. On how the issue of expected piling up of garbage in city limits in the coming days is going to be managed, the Chief Minister said that the local bodies would address it.He said once the Vilappilsala unit is closed, the govt will ask the Corporation to return the land to the govt. “An institution for higher learning or a development project will be established there,’’ he said.
